Uruguay joined the global celebrations for World Radiotherapy Awareness Day (WRAD) 2026, bringing together public and private healthcare institutions to raise awareness of radiotherapy and support patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Through patient information, awareness materials and social media activities, radiotherapy teams across the country helped share the message of “One Voice for Radiotherapy.”

Uruguay remains strongly committed to supporting the WRAD movement, with healthcare institutions and professional societies working together to promote greater understanding of radiotherapy. Participating centres displayed WRAD banners and distributed information leaflets featuring the campaign logo, helping patients better understand their treatment and offering reassurance throughout their cancer care journey.

Bringing Public and Private Radiotherapy Centres Together

Seven healthcare institutions across Uruguay participated in WRAD 2026, representing both the public and private healthcare sectors. Their involvement highlighted the shared commitment of radiation oncologists, radiotherapy technologists, medical physicists and wider healthcare teams to improving awareness of radiotherapy.

Three public institutions participated:

  • Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell, led by Dr. Valentina Ferreira, alongside the radiation oncology, technologist and medical physics teams.

  • Instituto Nacional del Cáncer, led by Dr. Álvaro Notejane, with postgraduate trainees, radiation oncologists, technologists and medical physicists.

  • Centro Oncológico del Norte, led by Dr. Mauricio Luongo, supported by the radiation oncology, technologist and medical physics teams.

Four private institutions also joined the celebrations:

  • Clínica Dres. Leborgne, led by Dr. Diego Bertini and the team at its Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz location.

  • Clínica COR, led by Dr. Mauricio Luongo, together with its radiation oncologists, technologists and medical physicists.

  • Oncosur, in the Florida department, led by Dr. Aldo Quarnetti, alongside radiation oncologists, technologists, medical physicists and administrative staff.

  • Servicio de Radioterapia del Sanatorio Americano: Chief Dr. Leandro Ricagni and team of radiation oncologists, technologists, and medical physicists.

Strengthening Awareness Through Professional Collaboration

Uruguay's involvement was supported by its professional radiotherapy community, including ALTYTRU (Association of Radiotherapy Technologists) and SUFIM (Uruguayan Society of Medical Physics). Their continued support reflects a shared commitment to raising awareness of radiotherapy and recognising the professionals who deliver this essential cancer treatment.

Social media also played an important role in extending the campaign's reach beyond participating treatment centres. These activities helped maintain the visibility of WRAD within Uruguay's radiotherapy community.

Dr. Lucas was also involved in activities connected with SOLAR, supporting wider regional collaboration across Latin America's radiotherapy community. These connections demonstrate how national initiatives can contribute to the growing international movement for radiotherapy awareness.

One Voice for Radiotherapy in Uruguay

Uruguay's participation in WRAD 2026 demonstrated the value of bringing healthcare professionals together around a shared goal. By focusing on patient information, professional collaboration and community awareness, participating institutions helped bring the WRAD message directly into clinical settings and strengthen understanding of radiotherapy.
