Patients, families and the Radiation Oncology team at Apollomedics Superspeciality Hospital in Lucknow, India, came together to mark World Radiotherapy Awareness Day (WRAD) 2026 with a day focused on awareness, understanding and connection.

Organised by the Department of Radiation Oncology under the guidance of Dr. Ayush Garg, Dr. Ajay Shukla and Dr. Nabila Anjum, the event aimed to help people better understand radiotherapy, address some of the common myths and fears surrounding treatment, and create a positive and memorable experience for patients and their families.

As part of the celebrations, radiation oncologists from Apollomedics created a special awareness video explaining radiotherapy in simple language and addressing some common misconceptions. The video was designed to help patients and families understand more about radiotherapy and its role in cancer treatment.

Throughout the day, patients and their families were encouraged to get involved in a range of activities. A specially designed WRAD 2026 selfie stand gave patients the opportunity to capture photographs with their loved ones, while radiotherapy-themed photo props and a photo frame helped create a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere within the department.

One of the most touching parts of the celebration was a message board where patients and family members could share their thoughts, feelings, blessings and messages. It quickly became a collection of words expressing hope, gratitude and encouragement.

The Radiation Oncology team also held an informal gathering with patients and their relatives, providing an opportunity to sit together, talk and share experiences away from the usual treatment environment. Light refreshments were served as patients, families and members of the team spent time together.

The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony involving the Radiation Oncology team, marking WRAD and their shared commitment to raising awareness of radiotherapy.

For the team, one of the highlights of the day was the enthusiastic participation of patients and their families. From adding messages to the board to posing for photographs and joining the celebrations, their involvement helped make the event particularly memorable.

By combining accessible information about radiotherapy with activities centred around patients and their loved ones, the celebration provided an opportunity to address misconceptions while creating moments of connection and positivity.

World Radiotherapy Awareness Day brings people around the world together to improve understanding of radiotherapy and give One Voice for Radiotherapy. The celebration at Apollomedics showed how this can also happen at a local level, bringing patients, families and radiotherapy professionals together to talk, learn and connect.

WRAD would like to thank Dr Garg, the Department of Radiation Oncology at Apollomedics Superspeciality Hospital, and everyone who took part for helping to raise awareness of radiotherapy and for making WRAD 2026 a memorable occasion for patients and their families.
